A Birthday Cake Smash in High Bridge, NJ

Birthday sits behind his first birthday cake smash cake I Cake Smash NJ

I took newborn photos for this little guy last year and mom really wanted him to have a cake smash for his first birthday. (PS– Isn’t it wild how much those two grew?!) Of course Big Sister wanted to get in on the action. Well to be fair, she did want to until it actually came down to getting dirty.

If you book a cake smash with me, it it part of a family session. Since I do not have a studio, I either do these sessions outside (my normal family sunset sessions) or in your home. This family chose their home since the birthday boy was born in the winter. It worked out perfectly that this family had hosted a birthday party for their son the weekend before our session. They left all of the decorations up (theme Winter One-derland) for this February baby including the balloon arch, so we were able to incorporate that into the background of the photos.

Expectation vs. Reality

This theme seems to be quite popular during my sessions with kids. You think, “How could they not like CAKE?!” And then, sometimes, you are surprised. I have had babies who only ate the fruit off of the top of their cake and then discarded the rest, some who have not been interested in any part of the cake, some who DOVE in and had a blast. We are all flying by the seats of our pants here! The thing is, I will give you incredible photos either way. As this mom said after she received her photos, “You should consider making a video blog! Show the behind the scenes of your shoots so that parents know the chaos is typical.” It’s on my to-do list!

This little guy was one of those birthday kids who wanted nothing to do with the cake. I always encourage siblings and parents to help out after I have gotten some photos of the birthday boy/girl alone with the cake and big sister did want to come in and help. However, as soon as her fingers got dirty, she was OUT. It’s nice to know that some parents have clean children, haha! Despite this minor issue, the outfit was on point, the cake looked great, and the birthday boy still had his chance to shine. I still call it a success!

I would love to chat with you about setting up your own NJ cake smash session. Sessions are customizable and we can make it amazing– whether or not your baby loves cake! Check out my work here.
